Set on the back porch of a home in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, the space needed to be realistic to the location and time period, while still being dynamic enough to create interesting connections and movements between characters. With specific requests from the director in mind, I designed an elevated porch of a house that clearly had not been maintained, reflecting Robert’s state of mind and capacity for everyday tasks. The angle of the house, multiple spaces to sit, and opportunities for different heights gave great flexibility to depict power, fear, and intensity in the relationships between characters.
